Conference & Collaboration Weekend

Following on from last year’s successful Collaboration Day, the Conference Weekend ends the festival with two days focusing on cross-art collaboration. Events will include workshops, papers and roundtable discussions as well as showcases of music and talks from professional composers and students alike. Our Conference Day aims to explore the meaning of the term “cross-art” and how our interpretation of it affects our expression and perception ofcomposition and performance.
- 9:30-10:00 Reception
- 10:00-11:45 Black Hair Contemporary Music Ensemble ‘Something for the Weekend’: a practical workshop. Bring your instruments.
- 12:00-13:00 Lunchtime concert by Chiasmus Ensemble. Programme to include music by Magnus Lindberg, Tim Jackson, Bent Sørensen, Steve Pycroft, and James Stephensons’ Angels of Anarchy.
- 13:45-15:15 Talk by Claire Williamson and Mark Lawrence ‘The Composer and Librettist in Collaboration’
- 15:30-16:30 New Music Forum ‘Music and Words’ Featuring senior lecturers
- 18:15-19:00 Pre-concert talk by Danish composer Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen
- 19:00-19:20 Cocktail concert by Chiasmus Ensemble. Programme to include music by Luciano Berio, Kirsty Blackwall, Peter Maxwell Davies and Gareth Peredur Churchill
- 19:30 Evening concert by Black Hair (NB. Tickets for this event are priced at £12 (£10) or £3 for students.)

In a similar vein to last year, the Collaboration Day will focus on events designed to enrich our understanding of artistic collaboration and build networks between composers and performers. Student ensembles from across the UK will perform works written by student composers from different universities. The Conference Weekend will appeal to those interested in music and the art of composition or performance.

- 10:00-11:00 Chiasmus Ensemble Workshop (one)
- 11:15-12:15 Showcase of Student Compositions (one)
- 13:00-14:00 Chiasmus Ensemble Workshop (two)
- 14:15-15:15 Seminar by Emily Kalies, ‘CWE: Creating with the Enemy?!?! Exploration of aesthetic through collaboration.’ Includes time for questions and further discussions on, around and about collaboration.
- 15:30-17:00 Showcase of Student Compositions (two)
Chiasmus is committed to experimenting with new musical ideas, working with other art forms, and bringing contemporary sounds to new places and new audiences. Chiasmus will present a selection of works and new commissions in many different styles, as well as running two student composition workshops that incorporate text and experimental theatre.
